Martha's Vineyard

My kids are 6 and 4 and it has been a joy to travel with them this year. We have hit a real sweet spot. If you have not hit that spot it’s probably because your children are younger and still need things like their own sleeping quarters, pack n’ play type things, a special noise machine at an exact setting, and 100 other items to get them to sleep including black out shades. If that is you, hang in there.

There are so many wonderful reasons why traveling is fun with kids. My personal favorite is how present it makes all of us. We only travel with a few toys/games, no ipad this trip (I forgot to charge it) and explored every day. I never thought about laundry, yard projects or having the gutters cleaned. Having both parents available to collect rocks, read books, and examine shells also means little to no sibling squabbles. I want to make traveling as a family more of a priority. It helps us all slow down and make memories. For this trip we went to Martha’s Vineyard.

I love Martha’s Vineyard! We didn’t have the best weather but the week was still beautiful. We stay in West Tisbury, because Lambert’s Cove is my FAVORITE beach. It is perfect if you have young children. The water is a smidge warmer compared to other beaches and there is a little stream for the kids to play in. Dogs are allowed in the morning and we were usually the only people on the beach.

Every person, blog, and website usually suggests the same handful of destinations and I agree. Dinner in Menemsha and stay for sunset. Edgartown for ice cream, dinner options, walk to the lighthouse, looking at beautiful homes and shops. Acquinnah beach and lighthouse and Katama Beach are a couple other beaches that always make the list and worth a visit.

I have a few other favorite spots and activities that aren’t always mentioned that we try and visit. The West Tisbury Farmers Market is one of them. We love to stop here for snacks, veggies, coffee and flowers.

It’s also a great way to find other farms to visit like, The Grey Barn and Farm. They offer a farm walk for kids and adults too. The farm stand is wonderful and the property is stunning. They also love their animals and are incredibly kind. Morning Glory Farm in Edgartown is another great stop for fresh produce and flowers if you can’t make it to the farmers market.

Beach Plum Inn and Restaurant is a picturesque stop for a slow morning breakfast. The food was delicious, the views were amazing, and then we wondered around the gardens and farm.

We loved driving and visiting farms and animals on our way home from the beach or on our way to ice cream. We ate a lot of ice cream this vacation and it was glorious. Rain or shine this island is a special place.
