Recipe Review: Dog Treats

Ollie, our sweet dog, turned 8 yesterday!

Ollie was a little fluff ball when we got engaged, part of our wedding and greeted both kids when they came home from the hospital. He actually smiles when we walk in the door.

Ollie got me through Will’s first year. We didn’t have a yard so Will and I would bundle up rain, snow, or shine for his walks. I was so proud of the glorious human I just made and I was sure all my neighbors wanted to see Will. Nope. Everyone stopped me to talk about Ollie. I didn’t mind, I was just happy to be outside and talking to a human adult. I talked to Ollie and Will all the time but a newborn and dog don’t give you much to work with.

We LOVE him so much. We decided to make him dog treats for his birthday and the next two months (we made a lot of treats). Why have I never done this before? It was easy and Mae loved helping. Ollie, and Will, loved eating the treats.

This dog treat recipe has a whopping 4 ingredients. Now that I know how simple they are to make I might add a little peanut butter next time. I used a few recipes I found online. I also used up two different flours, rice and regular.

2 1/2 cups flour

1 sweet potato (ours was pretty big)

1/4 cup applesauce (no sugar)

2 eggs

Mix everything up and roll the dough out. The dough is sticky so I used a lot of flour.

Mae loved cutting these out. We filled our cookie sheets, because the treats don’t expand much.

I will be making this recipe again and doctoring it up a little next time. This is a great recipe to make with kids. None of our measurement were exact, we cooked them a little too long, and Ollie was still grateful.

Pop them in the oven for 35 minutes at 350 degrees and spoil your pup. They should be completely dried out. I put a little batch in the fridge and the rest in the freezer.

Happy Birthday, Ollie! We are so grateful for your love.
